Chalk Farm is located 50 miles northwest of Washington, DC in the piedmont countryside of Loudoun County, Virginia. To the east one can see Catoctin Mountain, and to the west, Short Hill, with the Blue Ridge mountains beyond. The hamlet is one-half mile west of Berlin Turnpike (Rout 287) on John Wolford Road. It is 5 miles from Purcellville, (Loudoun County Transit commuter bus service), 10 miles from Brunswick, Maryland (MARC commuter train station), 10 miles from Leesburg, Virginia (Route 267 toll road), 25 miles from Dulles International Airport, and 30 miles from the Silver Line Metro train station Wiehle/Reston East. It will be 20 miles from the Ashburn Silver Line Metro train station, projected for 2021.
Stores and services are in Purcellville (population 8,000); Leesburg (population 42,000); and Frederick, Maryland, 25 miles (population 62,000). The hamlet’s public schools are Kenneth Culbert Elementary School and Woodgrove High School (between Hillsboro and Purcellville) and Harmony Middle School (between Purcellville and Hamilton).
Chalk Farm is adjacent to five working farms: Moutoux Orchard (fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, and eggs); Potomac Vegetable Farms; Greenstone Fields (flowers); Lydia’s Fields (vegetables); and Second Spring Farm (vegetables.) Neighboring farms use ecological methods exclusively.
